Project Description

On Saturday, 8th February 2025, Walsall Trades Union Council (TUC) proudly supported the community-led protest against the proposed closure and relocation of Walsall Leather Museum. The protest, held in Walsall town centre, saw residents, campaigners, and union members come together to voice their opposition to the council’s plans, which threaten to strip the town of its last remaining museum.

The Walsall Leather Museum is more than just a collection of historical artifacts—it is a crucial part of Walsall’s heritage, preserving the legacy of the town’s world-renowned leather industry. The proposed closure and relocation of the collection away from its historic home would not only diminish its significance but also risk reducing public access to this important piece of local history.

Recognising the strength of feeling within the community, Walsall TUC has formally written to Councillor Gary Perry, outlining the concerns raised by residents and campaigners. The letter calls for transparency on the council’s decision-making process and urges them to explore alternative solutions that would allow the museum to remain in its rightful place. We now await a response from the council.

The event was a testament to the power of collective action, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the organisers, campaigners, and all those who attended to stand in solidarity for the preservation of Walsall’s cultural heritage.

Walsall TUC remains committed to supporting this campaign and will continue to stand with the community to ensure that Walsall Leather Museum is protected for future generations.

Success! The decision to close the Walsall Leather Museum has been shelved, ensuring this important part of our heritage remains protected. This is a great victory for our community and local history.
