Walsall TUC proudly stood shoulder to shoulder with local residents, activists, and community leaders at a powerful protest held in Walsall town centre this week. The demonstration was a heartfelt cry against the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza—especially the deliberate starvation of children as a weapon of war

Banging Pots and Pans, Beating the Drum of Conscience
In a unique and symbolic display of resistance, protestors brought kitchenware—pots, pans, and utensils—to create a chorus of noise that could not be ignored. The clanging represented both the empty plates of Gaza’s starving children and the growing outrage across communities in the UK.

“No child should go to bed hungry—especially not as a result of political conflict,” said a Walsall resident, passionately banging a saucepan. The noise grew louder as chants of “Free Free Palestine!” and “Stop starving children!” echoed across the square.

Speeches From the Heart
Speeches were delivered by members of the local community, including trade unionists, faith leaders, and young activists, each expressing their deep sorrow, anger, and solidarity. Many referenced the heartbreaking scenes shared globally—of children queuing for bread, only to be killed by bombs or starvation.

One speaker said, “We have seen images no parent should ever have to see—children murdered while queuing for food, their desperation so deep they risk their lives just for a loaf of bread. We will not stay silent.”

Another speaker reminded the crowd that “Silence is complicity,” urging more people to raise their voices, write to MPs, and support humanitarian relief efforts.

Solidarity From Walsall, Across Borders
Walsall TUC’s presence signified the trade union movement’s deep commitment to international justice. As part of a long tradition of standing up against oppression, we continue to call for:

  • An immediate ceasefire in Gaza
  • Unhindered humanitarian aid access
  • An end to the collective punishment of civilians
  • Accountability for war crimes
  • Justice and freedom for Palestine

This protest was not an isolated event. It is part of a growing movement across the UK and around the world demanding that world leaders act now to end the suffering in Gaza. The use of starvation as a weapon is not only immoral—it is a war crime.

We Will Not Be Silent
The energy of the protest was emotional and urgent. The clanging of pots and pans may have faded by the end of the day, but the message remains loud and clear: Walsall stands with Gaza. Walsall stands with starving children. Walsall demands justice.
