Walsall TUC representatives were honoured to be invited to celebrate a historic milestone: the introduction of a statutory definition of honour-based abuse.

This achievement represents years of dedication, campaigning, collaboration and persistence by survivors, specialist organisations, campaigners and allies. We extend our sincere thanks to Roshni and the many individuals and organisations who have worked tirelessly to bring about this important change.

The introduction of a statutory definition is a significant step forward in recognising honour-based abuse and ensuring greater consistency in how it is understood, identified and addressed. It sends a clear message that abuse committed in the name of so-called 'honour' has no place in our communities or society.
However, while this milestone is worthy of celebration, it must also serve as a reminder that our work is not finished. Real change will come when this definition is fully understood by professionals, embedded into policy, and effectively implemented in practice. Awareness, education, training and adequate support services will be essential to ensuring that those at risk receive the protection they need.

As trade unionists, we recognise that honour-based abuse can affect people in every part of society, including workplaces. We remain committed to supporting efforts that promote safety, equality, dignity and justice for all.

Today, we remember all victims of honour-based abuse — those who are with us and those we have tragically lost. Their experiences, courage and memories strengthen our collective resolve to challenge abuse wherever it exists and to continue working towards a society free from violence, coercion and control.

This is a powerful achievement and an important step towards justice, protection and accountability. We stand in solidarity with survivors and all those continuing the fight to end honour-based abuse.
